One Year Ago (almost)...

Someone I know will be turning one on Sunday! Yes, it's true, Mariana's first birthday is here already! We are celebrating with family on Saturday. I thought I'd take an opportunity to share her birth story.

I went in early Friday morning for a scheduled induction. I was dilated to almost a four already and had been hoping to go into labor on my own, but not this time. They started pitocin just before 7 a.m. Our doula, Kim, showed up shortly thereafter. Things progressed fairly rapidly and it wasn't long before the contractions were getting quite painful. They wanted to use an internal catheter to monitor the contractions, supposedly it should give a better indication of how strong the contractions are. However, it really didn't work well for me. The nurse would come in and comment that my contractions didn't seem that strong on the monitor, but trust me, they were plenty strong. A little after 10 a.m. I got up, used the bathroom and then they checked me. I was only a six. I was crushed. I was miserable. The contractions were coming hard and fast and the prospect of enduring hours more of this almost sent me over the edge. My doula was wonderful in helping me regain my focus. Almost immediately the contractions kicked up another notch and I started feeling the need to push. They checked me again, and my room erupted into action. Apparently I had gone from a six to push in less than 20 minutes. No wonder I was ready to lose it. They got the room together and Mari was born in one push. Another miracle! I am so blessed!

I'm so excited to celebrate Mariana Ellen's first birthday, but I'm still in denial that it has already been a year.

  2. Happy birthday, sweet Mari! She's been on my mind a lot this week, Amanda, as I'm in denial about Molly as well. I was very blessed to have a friend like you with whom to go through pregnancy =)
